Don McFadyen

Master Mariner

Don spent a total of 16 years at sea, sailing as Master for 4 years. He started off in 1969 as a deck cadet with the South African Marine Corporation Ltd (Safmarine) and sailed mainly on general cargo, reefer and container vessels. Two years after obtaining his Master’s Certificate in 1978, Don joined the Marine Division of the South African Department of Transport as a Nautical Surveyor. He changed from the statutory surveying environment to that of commercial marine surveying in 1986. During the period 1986 to 1999 Don gained a wealth of experience in the commercial marine surveying, ship’s agency and supercargo fields. He returned to sea in 1999 as Master with De Beers Marine Ltd (DBM). Don relocated to the UK in 2002 and in between doing part-time survey assignments for TMC, he served as relief Master, or Chief Officer on mining vessels owned by DBM, on cross-channel freight ferries owned by Dart Line Ltd and on dredgers owned by UK Dredging Ltd.

In June 2007 Don opted to work exclusively for TMC.
