Simon Burthem

With twelve years of experience in the shipbuilding and ship classification industries, Simon joined TMC with a well-founded and diverse knowledge of ship design, construction and regulation. He started his career working in a shipyard design office before subsequently joining the American Bureau of Shipping as an engineer. During his time with ABS period Simon held a variety of increasingly senior roles both within the UK and abroad having established a new office and latterly rising to lead the Hull Plan Approval Team at the European headquarters.

Simon’s practical experience involves hull matters including the structure and stability of ships and other floating units. He has a strong background in class rules and is familiar with many of the statutory conventions in force. He has personally been involved in the plan approval of many different vessel types including Oil/Chemical Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Container Ships, Drill Ships, Passenger Vessels, Offshore Support Vessels, FPSOs and MODUs.

Since joining TMC as a Consultant Naval Architect in 2010, Simon has worked on a diverse range of shipping investigations and opinion work including ship stability and foundering, deck cargo loss, new construction disputes and hull structural failures. He has provided naval architectural support for wreck removal contractors and advice regarding the residual strength and stability of damaged vessels. He has undertaken damage assessment surveys and conducted vessel pre-purchase inspections.

Simon is a proficient user of several commercially available naval architectural software packages including TMC’s in-house Seamaster suite.
